As the summer draws to a close, the Sealy Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has been busy pushing forward a variety of projects that will significantly enhance the community. The August 2024 newsletter highlights the progress and plans that are shaping the future of Sealy, Texas.

FY’25 Budget Approved

In a critical step towards ensuring a prosperous year ahead, the Sealy EDC Board of Directors reviewed and approved the budget for Fiscal Year 2025. This budget lays out a comprehensive plan for various capital projects, including much-needed improvements to the W.E. Hill Center and the downtown area. By approving the budget early, the Board has set the stage for a year of targeted development and economic growth.

Downtown Parking Expansion

One of the most anticipated projects is the expansion of downtown parking. The Sealy EDC has been working diligently on this initiative, which will provide much-needed parking spaces for visitors and local businesses. The live auction of the building at 125 2nd Street, scheduled for September 20, 2024, is a key milestone in this project. The auction will free up space for the new parking lot, a crucial development that promises to enhance the convenience and appeal of downtown Sealy.

Hill Center and J.A. Cryan Park Improvements

The W.E. Hill Center is set to receive several updates, including interior and exterior painting and restroom renovations to comply with ADA accessibility standards. Meanwhile, plans are in motion to address erosion issues at J.A. Cryan Park Pond and improve the surrounding walking paths. These enhancements are part of a broader effort to make Sealy’s public spaces more welcoming and functional for residents and visitors alike.

City Splash Pad Project

The city’s long-awaited Splash Pad Project has encountered a funding shortfall, but the Sealy EDC has stepped up to bridge the gap. By reallocating funds from the Wayfinding Signs Project, the EDC has ensured that this exciting addition to the community will move forward. The Splash Pad is expected to be a popular attraction, offering families a fun and refreshing way to enjoy the outdoors.

Retail Development and Flock Cameras

The Sealy EDC continues to collaborate with The Retail Coach, a key partner in attracting new businesses to the area. Upcoming meetings will focus on retail opportunities in downtown Sealy, with an emphasis on creating a vibrant shopping and entertainment district.

In addition to retail development, the Sealy EDC is investing in enhanced security measures for the community. The installation of Flock license plate reader cameras in key areas is expected to boost safety and attract more visitors to Sealy’s business districts.

A Strong Start in Sales Tax Collections

June 2024 brought encouraging news for Sealy’s economy, with sales tax collections reaching $343,459.18, a 2.53% increase compared to the same period last year. This upward trend reflects a strong local economy, with several key industries contributing to the growth. As the year progresses, the Sealy EDC remains optimistic that this positive momentum will continue.

Looking Ahead

The Sealy EDC is committed to transparency, accountability, and progress as it navigates new projects and strategic plans. With a focus on both immediate improvements and long-term growth, the EDC is working to shape Sealy into a community of promise and prosperity. Stay tuned for more updates as these exciting projects unfold.
