The Sealy Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is setting the stage for growth and revitalization with a strong focus on the city’s historic downtown district. During its July Board of Directors meeting, staff presented a detailed overview of strategic planning that aims to breathe new life into Sealy’s historic core while supporting ongoing business expansion across the area.
A Downtown Built for the Future
The Board approved plans for revitalization projects centered on placemaking strategies. With guidance from an expert downtown development firm, Sealy EDC is working to strengthen storefronts, update ordinances, and promote investment in the district. These efforts are designed to encourage relaxation, entertainment, and a unique atmosphere that keeps both residents and visitors coming back.
Over the past year, more than 96,400 people visited Downtown Sealy, a figure EDC leaders hope to grow by making the district even more welcoming.
Strong Financial Growth
Sealy continues to post solid economic numbers. As of the fiscal year to date, sales tax collections reached $2.6 million, reflecting a 16.39% increase over last year. Over the past 12 months, local businesses generated more than $324,000 in new tax revenue.
Top industries leading Sealy’s economy include:
- Department Stores
- Limited Service Eating Places
- Other Nonstore Retailers
- Electric Utilities
- Full-Service Restaurants
Remote sales continue to play a role in Sealy’s tax base, but local businesses remain the backbone of growth.
Active on All Fronts
The Sealy EDC has been working at multiple levels to support community and business development:
- Strategy: The Board approved and recommended the FY 2025–2026 budget to City Council, with historic downtown revitalization as a priority.
- Community Engagement: Sealy EDC, CVB, and City staff are collaborating on new wayfinding signage to guide residents and visitors across town.
- Business Engagement: Partnerships with companies like SIKA Corporation are driving expansions that bring jobs and investment to the area.
- Local Engagement: A new video package showcasing Sealy is in production and will be featured on the redesigned Sealy EDC website.
- City-Level Development: Mayor Bilski and Sealy EDC are teaming up for networking and business discussions through events like the Sealy Chamber of Commerce Lunch and Learn.
- County-Level Development: Sealy EDC is partnering with Austin County to incentivize the SIKA Expansion Project, a $100 million investment expected to create significant local job opportunities.
Looking Ahead
The revitalization of the Downtown Historic District is more than a short-term project—it is a legacy initiative that future generations will inherit. By fostering collaboration between businesses, residents, and community partners, Sealy EDC is positioning Sealy as a destination that blends history with forward-looking growth.
