Sealy EDC January 2026 Update: Park Improvements, Wayfinding Plans, and Strong Sales Tax Performance

February 9, 2026

The Sealy Economic Development Corporation kicked off 2026 with continued momentum across infrastructure improvements, planning initiatives, and local economic performance. Highlights from the January newsletter reflect both near-term construction projects and longer-term investments in Sealy’s growth and identity.

Major Park Improvements Coming to Jacqueline A. Cryan Memorial Park

The City of Sealy, in partnership with Sealy EDC, is moving forward with significant upgrades to Jacqueline A. Cryan Memorial Park, with a strong focus on safety and accessibility.

Key components of the project include:

  • Pond erosion correction: Engineers have developed a plan to clean and reshape the pond’s banks. Years of natural erosion have compromised nearby walking paths, and this work is designed to restore stability while preserving the park’s appearance.
  • Path lighting installation: Modern lighting will be added along the primary walking path, allowing residents to safely enjoy the park during evening hours. This has been identified as a top community priority.

Construction is scheduled to begin as early as the first week of February. The project will involve dirt work and hauling, and excess dirt may be available to interested parties upon request.

While construction will occur near the park’s disc golf course, only one hole will be slightly relocated to accommodate the improvements. Informational signage will be placed throughout the park to keep the public updated on progress and scope.

Sealy EDC Board Actions and Approvals

The Sealy EDC Board of Directors met on January 27, 2026, and took several actions to support ongoing development efforts:

  • Approved the sign project for 419 Meyer Street
  • Approved amendments to EDC bylaws
  • Approved staff to move forward with researching EDC funding options for park playground equipment

These actions reflect a continued focus on both governance updates and quality-of-life investments.

Local Sales Tax Performance Shows Continued Strength

Sales tax data for the fiscal year shows steady growth and strong local participation:

  • Fiscal year-to-date collections: $669,115
  • Year-over-year growth: 1.52 percent
  • 12-month average collections: $333,462

Retail and service industries continue to drive much of the activity, with department stores, natural gas services, restaurants, and specialty contractors ranking among the top contributing sectors. Local sales continue to outperform remote sales, reinforcing the importance of shopping locally and supporting Sealy businesses.

Wayfinding Project Aims to Strengthen Sealy’s Identity

Sealy is also moving forward with a comprehensive Wayfinding Project designed to improve navigation while highlighting the city’s history and character.

The initiative goes beyond basic signage and explores features such as kiosks, interpretive panels, and “gateway” signage that connect parks, downtown, and historic areas. The project is being developed in collaboration with the MERJE Design Team, which has completed a city analysis and provided three schematic design concepts for review.

By leveraging existing billboard infrastructure and TxDOT standards, the goal is to create a consistent, recognizable system that guides residents and visitors from the interstate into the heart of Sealy. The Wayfinding Committee is currently reviewing the concepts, with results expected to be shared once assessments are complete.

Looking Ahead

From park improvements and signage planning to strong economic indicators, Sealy EDC’s January update reflects a balanced approach to growth. Infrastructure, safety, economic development, and community identity remain central priorities as Sealy continues building for the future.
